Whew, adulting is hard. We turn 18, become college students, and realize this real quick. Growing up means recognizing that taking care of yourself takes a lot of effort. Maturing means realizing that the older you get, the more responsibilities you have—and bills.
Becoming an adult means recognizing that with all that you have going on, it’s important to find joy in the little things, in the unexpected places. So, I have a few tips for thriving even when you don’t have the means (or funds) to do so.
Personal/Social
Find a church + youth group:
Finding a social or church group can be a transformative experience during your college years. It’s an opportunity to build meaningful connections with like-minded individuals who share your faith and values. Look for groups that resonate with your interests—whether it’s a Bible study, a worship team, or a community service project. Look up the churches in your area and start visiting! Most of them will probably have a Young Adult Ministry you can join.
These gatherings not only provide spiritual growth but also create a supportive network where you can discuss your challenges, celebrate victories, and explore your faith together. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone; joining a group can lead to friendships that last a lifetime and help you navigate the ups and downs of college life with encouragement and love. Remember, community is a vital part of your faith journey, and you never know how your involvement could impact both your life and the lives of others!
Get a Hobby + Build Good Habits
Creating hobbies and building good habits during college can be a wonderful way to nurture your spirit and find balance in your busy life. Dedicate time each week to activities that spark joy, like painting, journaling, or even gardening. Best hobbies for college students not only provide a creative outlet but also allow you to reflect on your faith and what truly matters to you.
Establishing good habits, such as setting aside quiet time, can help anchor you amidst the chaos of school. Remember, investing in yourself through these practices can lead to personal growth and creating a solid foundation that you will need as you grow older!
Fitness
Staying fit in college is so important for both your physical and mental well-being, and there are plenty of budget-friendly ways to make it happen! Your school’s gym is a great resource it’s free(ish) . They often offer free or low-cost classes like yoga, Zumba, or spin.
If you prefer working out at home, look for free workout videos online or download fitness apps that provide routines without breaking the bank (Try Classpass!). You can also get creative with outdoor activities, like hiking or running/walking in your local park or around campus.
Remember, making time for fitness not only boosts your health but can also be a wonderful way to connect with friends and enjoy God’s creation!
Finance
Managing finances in college can be a challenge, but with a little creativity, you can make your money go further! Keep an eye out for sales and discounts when shopping, especially for essentials. Sign up for apps such as Unidays and Student Bean they give college students discounts to several stores!
Consider building a side hustle that aligns with your skills or interests, whether it’s tutoring, freelancing, or even starting a small business. Now is the time to start this because when you’re graduated and working, it’ll be harder to find the time!
Fun jobs like working at a campus café or event planning can not only provide some extra cash but also allow you to meet new people and gain valuable experience. Remember, being financially savvy is not just about saving money; it’s also about using your resources wisely and finding joy in the process!
Beauty + Style
Navigating beauty and style on a college budget can be a fun challenge! Start by exploring thrift stores and online marketplaces for unique clothing pieces that won’t break the bank—it’s a great way to find one-of-a-kind items while being eco-friendly.
When it comes to beauty, consider DIY skincare treatments using simple ingredients from your kitchen; they can be just as effective as store-bought products! Also, keep an eye out for sales or student discounts at your favorite beauty stores. Remember, true beauty shines from within, so embrace your unique style and let your confidence reflect your faith!
